Ø The Cabinet approved the long-pending proposal
to install mobile towers in nine Naxal-affected states by BSNL at a cost of Rs.
3,216 crore that will be borne by the government. It gave the nod for the
setting up of 1,836 base transmission towers to improve connectivity.

Irom Sharmila, who was on fast since
November 4, 2000 demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act,
1958, walked free from the security ward of J.N. Institute of Medical Sciences,
Imphal.

The
government announced a special programme to transform India into a digitally
empowered society. The programme “Digital India” was approved at a meeting of the Cabinet
chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The programme has been
envisaged by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology. The
programme will be implemented in phases from the current year till 2018. It
would ensure that government services are available to citizens electronically.
The source of funding for most e-governance projects at present is through
budgetary provisions of respective ministries or departments in the central or
state governments. The programme envisions high-speed internet as a core
utility which would be made available in all gram panchayats. Mobile phone and
bank accounts would enable participation in digital and financial space at
individual levels.

Noted
filmmaker and poet Muzaffar Ali was conferred the Rajiv
Gandhi Sadbhavana award.
The award, instituted by the All-India Congress Committee in honour of former
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was presented to Mr. Ali by AICC president Sonia
Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Jawahar Bhawan
Ø Congress leader K.V. Thomas took over as Chairman of the Public Accounts
Committee of Parliament on Wednesday. He will be the 94th PAC Chairman.
