31 AUGUST 2014: Padma Bhushan Historian Bipan Chandra passes away

Ø  In a sign of growing warmth between the two countries, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was at the Kyoto state guest house to receive Mr. Modi. Mr. Modi arrived at Osaka airport and then drove to Kyoto. The two Prime Ministers witnessed the signing of a partner city affiliation agreement between Varanasi (Kashi) and Kyoto, which will see cooperation in the fields of heritage conservation, city modernisation and culture, an official Indian spokesman said. Mr. Abe then hosted Mr. Modi for an informal dinner.
Ø  The Sivaramakrishnan Committee on the capital for Andhra Pradesh has made it clear that it did not consider a single large capital city a feasible option and found the Vijayawada- Guntur stretch strongly pitched by the State Government as “unfeasible for financial reasons and undesirable for decentralised development.”

Ø  Historian Bipan Chandra, a Left-leaning expert in economic and political history of India, passed away. He was 86. A Padma Bhushan awardee, Chandra had donned multiple roles including that of chairperson of the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, member of the University Grants Commission and the chairman of the National Book Trust.

Ø  Former Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam will be the next Kerala Governor following the resignation of Sheila Dikshit a few days ago. This is the first time a retired CJI is being appointed Governor.
