24 DECEMBER 2014: Hung verdict in assemblies bring coalition era back

Ø  The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with 28 seats, has emerged as the single largest party in Jammu and Kashmir, but the hung Assembly formed by a four-cornered division of seats has made government-formation an uphill task. The incumbent National Conference (NC) was beaten by anti-incumbency, but has survived to fight another battle by winning 15 seats — 13 less than its 2008 tally. The BJP will explore the option of either leading a coalition government or becoming part of one, its president Amit Shah told a press conference.

Ø  As the Winter Session of Parliament came to an end, highly placed sources said the government was determined to issue an ordinance to raise foreign direct investment in the insurance sector from 26 per cent to 49 per cent. The Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2008, that had been listed in the legislative business of the Rajya Sabha, was not passed till the House adjourned on Tuesday afternoon due to frequent disruptions.
