Ø External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will start a big season of
Israel-Arab League diplomacy when she lands in Israel on January 16. From
Israel, Ms. Swaraj is scheduled to leave for Ramallah for the first official
visit by her to the headquarters of the Palestinian Authority on the morning of
January 17. She is expected to return same day to continue discussions with
Israeli leaders. However, what is drawing attention of policymakers in South
Block is that within two days of her Israel trip, Ms. Swaraj will fly out to
Bahrain to attend the India-Arab League meeting of Foreign Ministers, on
January 23-24, to assess the fallout of Iran-Saudi hostilities on India.
Ø Loans given under the PMMY Scheme (Pradahan
Mantri Mudra Yojana) is set to achieve the target of Rs.1.2 lakh crore by March
2016, according to Jiji Mammen, Chief Executive Officer of Micro Units
Development & Refinance Agency Ltd (MUDRA). Around Rs.75,000 crore
have been given till December 2016. Nearly half of the 1.7 crore
beneficiaries are people who are setting up new units while the rest have used
the micro finance facility for expanding their units, he said on the sidelines
of a conference of micro finance institutions in this region. The loans were
disbursed by banks and MFIs. The PMMY Scheme was launched by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi on April eight, 2015.
