A high-power committee headed by
former Cabinet Secretary T.S.R. Subramanian, tasked with drawing a blueprint
for a new national education policy, has recommended that the law that set up
the higher education regulator University Grants Commission (UGC) be allowed to
lapse.

India’s commitment to the SAARC
and principle of non-alignment will not be downgraded as India seeks a new
global role, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said. The impression that
we have forgotten the SAARC while pursuing the NSG is not correct. India has
emerged as a country that is first to help neighbours in need. India was the
first country to rush help to the earthquake-struck Nepal, we helped Maldives
in countering water crisis and supported Sri Lanka when it faced floods. “South
Asia First” policy remains our priority and we have never neglected
neighbours,”
