7 JULY 2014: Kamla Benival Transferred to Mizoram, Margaret Alva is new governor of Gujarat

Ø  A day after 46 nurses returned from Iraq, another 200 Indians arrived from Najaf. Another 117 people are expected to arrive in New Delhi by an Iraqi Airways plane on Monday morning, the Ministry of External Affairs said. Approximately 2,200 Indian nationals have indicated their desire to leave. Of them, 600 have been provided tickets by their companies, while 1,600 are being provided tickets by the Government of India.

Ø  Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal was transferred to Mizoram for the remainder of her term, a Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué said. Vakkom Purushothaman, Governor of Mizoram, was shifted and appointed as Governor of Nagaland for the rest of his term. However, Mr. Purushothaman will continue to hold the additional charge of the office of the Governor of Tripura. Rajasthan Governor Margaret Alva will discharge the functions of the Governor of Gujarat, in addition to her own duties, until regular arrangements are made. Her tenure finishes in August. Among the names doing the rounds for appointment as Governors are BJP leaders Kesri Nath Tripathi, Lalji Tandon from U.P., Kailash Joshi from Madhya Pradesh, V.K. Malhotra from Delhi, O. Rajagopal from Kerala and Balramji Dass Tandon from Punjab. Eminent jurist Soli Sorabjee, who served as the Attorney-General during NDA rule, was also said to have been shortlisted.
Ø  Law Commission chairman Justice A.P. Shah said a “very keen” National Democratic Alliance government has asked the Commission to simplify laws for clearance of projects to promote an investor-friendly climate. He said the government should put all information, especially regarding licences and contracts in respect to projects dealing with scarce natural resources, in the public domain.
Ø  Within days of presenting his first budget, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will head for their first big international visit for the BRICS summit in Brazil, with development and the BRICS bank at the top of the agenda. The BRICS summit will be followed by a trip to Brazilia, where President Rousseff has invited leaders of South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuala and Surinam to meet with them as well. It is unclear how many bilateral meetings Mr. Modi will have, but the focus will be on his meetings with President Xi and President Putin. President Xi is also expected to visit India in September with a host of bilateral announcements and infrastructural deals on the cards. A Fortaleza declaration that will include an announcement on the $100 billion dollar BRICS bank is also expected. Officials said the decision on whether to base the bank in Shanghai, as primary donor China has proposed was still “under negotiation.”

Ø  Air India will be formally inducted as the 27th member of the global airlines’ club, Star Alliance, later this week. The induction is expected to improve Air India’s connectivity to high-growth economies and give the 26 Star Alliance members access to India’s domestic aviation market.
