Ø India and China signed 13
agreements as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping
called for speeding up the boundary resolution process. India raised concerns
over the standoff at the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh “and repeated
incidents” along the border. A Defence Ministry source said soldiers had formed
a “human wall” to deal with the ongoing face-off. In Beijing, however, a
Foreign Ministry official said the situation had been “effectively controlled”
and “managed.”
Ø Chinese President Xi Jinping made a special
announcement on opening a new route for pilgrims to Kailash-Mansarovar in the
Tibetan Autonomous Region. China also made a pitch for a civil nuclear
cooperation agreement, and India has agreed to begin discussions on that.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding for Railways, both sides agreed to work
on raising the speed and more cooperation on the Chennai-Mysore route as well
as discussing the bullet train project.
Ø Having contributed to the eradication of polio
in India, the Gates
Foundation is now planning to work with the new Indian
government to wipe out kala azar. The foundation’s co-chairs, Melinda
Gates and her husband, former Microsoft co-founder and CEO Bill Gates, are in
India to meet the new government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
his Cabinet colleagues.
