24 SEPTEMBER 2014: Liar's Dice 4 Oscars...
- Hindi road drama Liar’s Dice will be India’s nomination for the Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, which will be given away in Los Angeles in 2015. The movie, directed by Kerala State award-winner Geetu Mohandas, stars national award winners Geetanjali Thapa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Set along the Himachal-Tibet border, the movie deals with distress migration.
- Public sector giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will construct two thermal power generating stations for the Telangana State Generation Corporation (TSGENCO) at Kothagudem and Manuguru in the next three years. The government will soon enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state-owned company, for augmentation of capacities to the extent of 800 MW and 1080 MW respectively at both locations.
- Expanding the powers of Governors, the Karnataka High Court declared that Governors will get the power to suspend the chairman or members of a the State Public Service Commission (PSC) soon after making recommendations to the President for their removal, by making reference to the Supreme Court. In a first-of-its-kind interpretation on the Governors’ powers on suspending a PSC chairman or members, the court made it clear that the starting point of the Presidential reference for their removal will begin with the Governor making a recommendation to the President, and not from the date of the President making the actual reference to the Supreme Court based on the Governor’s recommendation.
- The government has set up a high-level committee to reconfigure the Railway Board as well as to suggest steps for resource mobilisation for major projects. To be headed by economist Bibek Debroy, the other members are the former Cabinet Secretary, K.M. Chandrashekhar, the former National Stock Exchange managing director Ravi Narain, senior fellow in the Centre for Policy Research Partha Mukopadhyay and former Procter & Gamble CMD Gurcharan Das. The sixth member will be a nominee from the Ministry of Finance.
