Ø Decks have been cleared for a possible global
trade deal after India and the U.S agreed on the way forward to break the
logjam in global trade negotiations. With the agreement in place, India is all
set to move its proposal on food security before the WTO’s General Council at
its next meeting scheduled for early December.
Ø Minister for Public Works H.C. Mahadevappa,
appealed to the people to use manufactured sand (M-sand) for construction works
instead of riverbed sand to prevent the environment from degradation.
Ø A massive $ 200 billion business opportunity in
the aerospace and defence areas is set to open up in the next 15 years in the
country, according to the former Scientific Adviser to
Defence Minister, V.K. Saraswat. He was
talking to reporters after the keynote address at a Defence & Aerosupply
India Exhibition and Conference. Mr. Saraswat said the military offset
policy alone was expected to create opportunity to the extent of $ 30 billion.
With need for modernisation of the equipment of the armed forces, more
investment was required. To a question, he said the government’s policy
towards indigenous development and production had to be changed.
Corporate-style functioning with complete autonomy should be introduced in
public sector undertakings to enable them face competition. Every PSU should be
allowed to build a large number of private clusters around it.
