Ø The Indian Navy has put three ships and a
maritime surveillance aircraft on standby for search and rescue operation for
the AirAsia
flight QZ8501 that has been missing. Navy sources said one ship in the Bay of Bengal
and another two in the Andaman Sea have been put on standby. Additionally, a
P-8I long-range patrol aircraft has also been put on standby at Arakkonam in
Tamil Nadu. The assets are ready in all respects for deployment should there be
orders from our government to join the search for the missing airliner.
Ø The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence
has expressed concern at the dwindling number of fighter squadrons of the IAF.
The squadron strength has come down to 25 from the sanctioned 42, said a report
of the committee tabled in Parliament.
