Ø The U.K. will honour the Indian soldiers who fought alongside their
British officers during the World War I with special plaques to be unveiled at
a war memorial next month. The National Memorial Arboretum at Staffordshire in
the West Midlands region of England will honour 11 soldiers from undivided
India who were awarded the Victoria Cross for their service alongside a total
of 145 overseas-born fighters from Commonwealth countries such as Pakistan,
Nepal, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand and Canada at a commemorative event.
Ø The official secrets smuggling case spread to three more
Ministries — Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy — as the Delhi Police
found out that documents from these ministries were also being leaked and sold
off. The police on Monday arrested one Lokesh Sharma, with links to two of the
accused under arrest Santanu Saikia and Prayas Jain and kicked off
investigations as a parallel case. Sources
hinted that more arrests were likely as searches and raids were continuing in
Delhi and NCR. So far, the Delhi Police have arrested 12 persons in connection
with theft of documents from the Petroleum Ministry. Both Mr. Saikia and Mr.
Jain bought documents from Sharma at hefty prices. The police were probing his
links with two-three other companies as well.
Ø Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour , which captures whistleblower Edward
Snowden’s NSA surveillance leak unfolding in real time, won the best
documentary feature Oscar at the 87th Academy awards. Jennifer Aniston and
David Oyelowo presented Poitras, Mathilde Bonnefoy and Dirk Wilutzky with the
award.
Ø Rana Bhagwandas, the first Hindu to serve as the Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court of Pakistan,, died in Karachi.
