Ø Russia said an unmanned supply
ship set for the International Space Station will fall back to Earth on Friday,
after it suffered a communications failure. The progress supply ship is
expected to “end its existence on May 8” between 12.45 a.m. and 06.36 a.m.,
Moscow time (3.15 a.m. — 9:06 a.m. India time),”
Ø Achal Kumar Jyoti, a former Chief Secretary during the tenure of the
Narendra Modi as Gujarat Chief Minister, was appointed Election Commissioner.
Mr. Jyoti (62) retired from active service in January 2013 after serving in various
capacities in Gujarat, including as Chairman of the Kandla Port Trust between
1999 and 2004 and Managing Director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. His
tenure as EC will commence from the day he assumes charge, a Law Ministry
notification said. Mr. Jyoti will have a tenure of nearly three years,
when he will turn 65.
Ø Organisers of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival said on Thursday they are
shutting down the annual international event after eight years, even as the
oil-rich emirate attracts greater attention from Hollywood studios. The
Media Zone Authority-Abu Dhabi said it wants to put greater focus on supporting
local and Arab talent and attracting filmmakers to the region. A fund
associated with the festival that is designed to assist Arab filmmakers will
continue.
