Ø In an election the results of which defied all expectations and
predictions, the Conservative Party, led by David Cameron, was swept back to
power on Friday — this time with a convincing majority — to govern the United
Kingdom for another five years.
Ø Envoys of the Philippines and Norway and the wives of the Malaysian and
Indonesian ambassadors were among seven persons killed when a Pakistani
military helicopter crashed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed it had downed the chopper with an
anti-aircraft missile and said Premier Nawaz Sharif was its target. Bur Mr.
Sharif was on another aircraft. The Pakistan Army, however, ruled out the
possibility of any terrorist or subversive activity in the crash in PoK’s
Gilgit-Baltistan region and said the chopper had crashed due to a technical
fault while landing.
Ø The Sahara Group informed the Supreme Court on Friday that it was ready
to furnish Rs.5,000 crore in bank guarantees to complete the payment of
Rs.10,000 crore required to secure the release of its chief Subrata Roy on
bail, but the apex court pointed to the company’s long-pending liability to
refund Rs.24,000 crore to investors. A three-judge Bench headed by
Justice T.S. Thakur, while allowing Sahara to furnish the bank guarantees for
bail by next week, asked the company when it would finally honour its investors.
Ø Poor implementation of the dual freight policy for transportation of
iron ore resulted in a financial loss of Rs. 29,237 crore to the Indian
Railways during 2008-2013, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report
tabled in Parliament on Friday revealed. According to the audit, even in
the case of the Steel Authority of India Limited, non or partial submission or
submission of invalid mandatory documents to the authorities concerned and
lapses by railway officials resulted in short charging of freight of Rs.
4,838.80 crore, besides a penalty of Rs. 5.45 crore.
Ø It’s a historic day for a historic regiment of the Indian Army: the
first time a contingent of the Nine Grenadiers regiment will march in an
international military parade, as part of Russia’s Victory Day commemoration.
The 75-member contingent has been practising at an army facility outside Moscow
since April 25, and will be part of 10 militaries, including Russia’s Red Army
and China’s PLA, to take part in the May 9 parade. While Russia marks the day
each year for the defeat of Hitler’s army in 1945, this year is special as it
is the 70th anniversary, and President Pranab Mukherjee is one of about 16
presidents expected to attend the parade.
