Ø Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa asked the Power and Energy Ministry
to expedite work on the Sampur power plant
coming up in Trincomalee with Indian assistance. The 500-MW plant is the NTPC first international
joint venture with the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
Ø The Gujarat government reinstated suspended IPS officer G.L. Singhal, associated
with the ‘Snoopgate’ scandal and an accused in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter
case.
Ø One of the highest paid lawyers in the Supreme Court, Mukul Rohatgi, will be the
14th Attorney-General of India to succeed Gulam Vahanvati. Mr. Rohatgi
has represented the Gujarat government in the Supreme Court in many cases on
the 2002 Gujarat riots and fake encounter. These include the Best Bakery and
Zahira Sheikh cases.

Ø Mr. Jaitley gave the go-ahead for the ongoing process of selling its
residual stake in Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (HZL) and Balco. The government holds 49 per cent stake in Balco and 29.5 per
cent in HZL.
