Ø Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Make in
India’ campaign at a high-profile
event on Thursday, which captains of industry from India and abroad immediately
joined by committing multi-crore investments and projects in the presence of
Mr. Modi. Speaking on the occasion, Aditya Birla Group chief Kumar Mangalam
Birla said his steel-to-software conglomerate already had its manufacturing
base in India and now planned to leverage its global production facilities for
bringing technology here.
Ø Bamiyan, the Afghan town which shot into prominence
when the Taliban blew up two ancient statues of the Buddha in 2001, has been
selected to be the SAARC cultural capital for a year beginning April 2015.
Dhaka will be the SAARC cultural capital in 2016-17.

Ø Cricket legend Kapil Dev has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement
award at a ceremony in the House of Lords. The award, constituted by the
Indo-European Business Forum, was presented to Dev for his contribution to the
sport and for his work to uplift poor.
Ø The Central government and public sector unit
employees, for the first time ever, will have to compulsorily mark their
attendance on Gandhi Jayanthi by undertaking a “Swachhata
Shapath [cleanliness
pledge]” on October 2, a national holiday. As part of the week-long
cleanliness and awareness drive beginning Thursday, Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth
has issued orders to all the Central Secretaries, seeking their participation
in the campaign. “The text of the pledge is being prepared. On October
2, all the officials in the government and public sector units would be
required to take the pledge of cleanliness,” said an official, adding that
surprise checks may also be conducted to ensure effective implementation.
Ø For the first time, the 100 richest tycoons in
India are all billionaires with Mukesh Ambani topping the league for the eighth consecutive
year, according to Forbes . With a net worth of $23.6 billion, up $2.6
billion from last year, RIL Chief Mukesh Ambani topped the list for the eighth
consecutive year. Mr. Ambani was followed by Dilip Shanghvi, who got richer
this year by $4.1 billion. Mr. Shanghvi is the new No. 2, after he displaced
steel baron Lakshmi Mittal ($15.8 billion), who slipped to the fifth place.
Wipro’s Azim Premji moved up one notch to the number three position as his net
wealth increased to $16.4 billion from $13.8 billion previously. Pallonji
Mistry of construction giant Shapoorji Pallonji Group, which is the biggest
shareholder in Tata Sons, with a new worth of $15.9 billion, was placed in the
fourth place.
